I was a volunteer twice running, in the 1960s, and I remember my time in Germany with fondness and the fundraising period before, involving an early morning drive in an old van, with a line of hard boiled eggs along the dashboard – to Portobello Road where we hoped to set up a stall to sell our clothes and other bits and bobs … as I remember it, we were turned away – I think we were deemed too young!
I remember quite clearly the whole adventure, some names of other students and I have quite a few photos – not brilliant quality but they definitely show the spirit of the experience!
Update (added 7 June 2020):
I remember my time at the camp amazingly well! I have quite a few black and white photos – not brilliant quality, but they are full of the atmosphere of the camp. Some of them are already on the website – I believe they were sent to me by Stefan Saum and his wife.
Some of the others who came with me were, I think: Philip Seddon, Paul Hawksworth, Martin Ricketts, Sandy Wilson and Angus Hislop.
I also saw the names of Gillian Heggarty and Mervyn Bramley …. I am not 100% sure of their names, but it was an age ago. I think I remember a Sue Bennett and John Campion – but I’m not super sure. As it happens, I am going through a major declutter and clear out, so I shall probably find more papers related to my time in Sankt Peter.
When I have done this, I would be happy to write a piece about my experience and adventures, including the kitchen being set on fire (!). As a couple of the pics already on the site show, one of the lads had a bit of a crush on me … he was “the tough guy”, but went all silly soft on me … which was very endearing. I wonder where he is now?
My sister worked in the office for FD (she was killed a short while later in a road accident), so the whole camp experience was important to me.
